Monday, July 12th, 1999 --TRANSIT SIGNAL PRIORITY WORKSHOP

8:30 - 10:00          SESSION 1: Transit Priority –What Do You Want From It?

In this session, the goals and objectives of providing priority to transit vehicles will be discussed from a transit agency and a traffic agency perspective.  Different agencies will be asked to discuss what defines a “successful” implementation.

·      What Does Transit Want -- TBD

·      Ron Atherley --What Does Traffic Want and Not Want

·      Shahrzad Amiri –Issues Facing a New Implementation

10:00 - 10:30        BREAK

10:30 - 12:00        SESSION 2: Transit Priority In Action

This session is intended to be a state-of-the-practice review of different transit priority system.  Speakers will be asked to discuss the design and implementation of actual system implemented in the field.  Each speaker will be asked to address specific questions (e.g., Why did you pick the detection technology that you did and what issues did you consider?) in presentation.

·                  Mark Pitstick – Illinois DOT – Bus Priority

·                  Sean Skehan  -- City of Los – LRT Priority

·                  George Serumgard – Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro – Bus Priority

12:00 - 1:00          LUNCH

1:00 - 2:30                        SESSION 3: Transit Priority Standards and Research

This session is intended to provide the committee with an idea of what has been happening in terms of new standard development and algorithm development.

·         Ed Seymour – TCIP/NTCIP Transit Signal Priority Standards

·         Larry Head – TCRP A-16 Research (algorithm development)

·         Kevin Balke – Intelligent Bus Priority Concept

·         Juan Morales –Route Pre-emption Research

3:00 – 3:30            BREAK

3:30 – 5:00            SESSION 4: Research Needs -- Roundtable Discussion

This session will be a moderated roundtable discussion that will address the research needs of practitioners dealing with transit signal priority.  Potential discussion items include the following:

·      How do you handle installation across multiple jurisdictions?

·      How do you marry EMS priority and bus priority systems (technology issues)?

·      How do you measure the “benefits” / cost effectiveness of priority systems?

·      How do you decide where to install priority systems?

·      How do you handle multiple priority requests?

·      Algorithm Development/Detection Technologies
